The Barton Community College baseball team had their season come to a crushing halt late Friday night in the final four of the Region VI/Central District Tournament as walk-off two RBI single capped a Hutchinson Community College's four-run bottom of the ninth rally for a 9-8 victory at Wichita State's Eck Stadium.
Barton's season and title defense ended at 37-22 with Hutchinson improving to 43-20 advancing to the loser's bracket final against Colby Community College (37-21).
The Cougars began Friday's action with the 10:00 a.m. elimination game, ending Johnson County Community College's season at 46-12 following an 8-3 victory. Easton Smith hurled a complete nine inning game improving to 5-2 in limiting the Cavaliers to just five hits. Chandler Kelley led Barton's nine hits with a trio of connections while Charlie Peyla led the RBI production with both coming a mammoth two-run home run to left field highlighting the Cougars' five run second inning.
Rallying from an early four run deficit against Hutchinson, Barton posted solo runs in the third and fifth before taking the lead in the sixth. Andrew Stewart provided a pair of runs to put the Cougars ahead with Harrison Denk following to drive him home to cap the four run frame.
Hutchinson cut the deficit in half on a single but Peyla gave the Cougars a three-run cushion in the ninth blasting his second home run of the day over the Eck Stadium scoreboard.
The Blue Dragons connected on consecutive singles to begin the home half, adding another to the basepaths on Barton's lone error of the contest. Following a walk to force in a run, a fielder's choice plated another with a hit by pitch reloading the bases before the game winning two RBI single to left.
