Park City runs comes to an end; Christy final former Cougar playing at NBC
The magical run of the Park City Cowboys and 5 current or former Barton County Community College baseball players finally came to an end Thursday night at the National Baseball Congress World Series. The Cowboys lost a 6-5 setback to Prairie Gravel (Ill), giving them a 7th place finish at the event. Not bad for the last team to get into the tournament as a replacement for another team that couldn’t make the trip. Park City ends the double elimination tournament with a 5-2 record. Former Cougar Jeff Christy is still playing in the NBC tournament as a member of the Santa Barbara Forresters. Santa Barbara is the lone unbeaten team remaining in the tournament. In all, 21 current or former Cougars played in the NBC World Series.

The Cowboys started Barton County lefty Luke Kramer Thursday night, but the sophomore pitcher lasted just 2 innings, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits. But Park City matched Prairie Gravel run for run early, with the two teams tied a 3-all after 2 innings. Park City trailed 5-4 heading into the 9th as it were poised once for its 4th come-from-behind win in the tournament. Park City tied the game at 5-all in the top of the inning but left the bases loaded – the Cowboys loaded them with 1 out – missing out on an opportunity to take the lead. Prairie Gravel scored a single run in the bottom of the inning for the win.
Brent Biggs was hitless in the contest, going 0-for-4 as was former Cougar Mark Stoltz, who was 0-for-4 as well.
The Cougars have been well represented in the World Series with the Parkville (Mo) Sluggers having the most current and ex-Cougars on the team with 6. Park City had 5, the Wichita Braves and Hays Larks 3 each and the Beatrice Bruins 2. Santa Barbara, Colorado Sox, and Newton Rebels each had one. Ironically, Prairie Gravel ended 5 of the 7 eliminated teams with Barton players from the World Series.
