Carter headed to Hawaii

Jason Carter became the latest in a growing list of Barton County Community College basketball players to move on to an NCAA Division I school to continue playing basketball. Carter made that official when he signed a letter-of-intent to play basketball for the University of Hawaii. Carter picked Hawaii over South Carolina, Wichita State, and San Jose State.
"I like the type of play, the style of play they have," Carter said. "They also have great atmosphere and the people are nice as well. They really treated me well when I went out there."
Another reason Carter said he chose to play his final two years at Hawaii was the success of the Rainbows this past season, which earned them a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
During his sophomore season at Barton County, Carter was second on the Cougars in scoring at 16.4 points per contest. The 5-9 guard also averaged nearly five rebounds and three assists per outing as well as leading the Jayhawk in steals at 2.5 per contest. Those numbers helped him earn All-Jayhawk West 2nd team honors.
"Mine time at Barton County has made me a better ball player and a better person," Carter said. "We had two good teams, both could have won the National Championship."
During his freshman season, Carter scored the final two points on the season -- two very big points. Carter hit a breakaway, floating layup just before the buzzer in the Cougars' 7th place contest at the NJCAA Tournament, which gave Barton County the win.
But that memory is not his most vivid. That came during his first year on campus -- a redshirt for the Gary, Ind. native.
"I remember sitting on the bench and watching Jackie Rogers jump over somebody and dunk on them," Carter said. "That let me know right away that this conference had a lot of great athletes in it.
"I just want to thank Coach (Ryan) Wolf for giving me the opportunity to play basketball here and the Booster Club and fans for their great support."
