The Barton County Community College men's basketball team opened its 2003-04 season in Lamar, Colorado splitting games in the McDonald Classic. The Cougars, under the direction of 1st year head coach Dave Campbell, opened the season with a 121-60 win over the Lamar Alumni then fell to Lamar College 81-79.
Highlights
The Cougars were slated to play Aurora Community College in the opener, but after Aurora called and canceled, the Cougars took on an alumni team from Lamar. Barton had very little trouble against the Lamar Alumni, rolling to the 61-point win. The Cougars put up 102 shots in the contest and grabbed 27 offensive boards to propel themselves to the win. No Barton starter played more than 10 minutes in the win.
The Cougars were led by Joe Dickens in the contest, scoring 24 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field. Antanas Kavaliauskas added 20 points in 13 minutes of playing time. Rone Smith turned in a double-double – the second of his career – with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Smith just missed his 1st ever triple-double, dishing out 8 assists. Also finishing in double figures in the win was Joel Hannagan, who tallied 17.
The Cougars faced a much tougher foe against Lamar College Sunday evening, missing out on some opportunities late to tie or take the lead in the 2-point loss. The two teams traded the lead much of the 1st half before a late surge by the Lopes gave Lamar a 45-36 halftime lead. That lead grew to 11 early in the 2nd half before the Cougars came storming back to take 10-point lead.
The game featured 19 lead changes and 7 ties. Barton's 27 turnovers proved costly in the setback. Justin Rose led the Cougars with 17 points, including a 3-of-4 effort behind the 3-point arc. Aubrey Bruner added 14 points while Joel Hannagan came off the bench to fire in 14 points as well, hitting 4-of-6 treys. The Cougars made 13-of-24 3-pointers during the loss.
Quinton Hosley scored 20 to pace the Lopes.
