Cougars burned by red hot Blue Dragons

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team ran up against the hottest team in the region Saturday night at the Sports Arena as No. 7 ranked Hutchinson Community College rolled in second half play for a 94-77 victory. Trailing by six at the break Barton battled back to tie it at forty eight before the Blue Dragons put together a 17-4 run breaking the game open with the Cougars never able to recover. The loss ends the regular season for Barton at 9-8 in conference play and 18-12 on the season while Hutchinson won its tenth straight to control its destiny for the conference title Monday at Garden City improving to 15-3 and 26-3 on the season. Barton will next turn its sights on the Region VI playoffs as the Cougars earned a first round home game set for Thursday, February 25, in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off against an opponent yet to be determined.

Barton men drop conference battle of polar opposites

It’s said defense wins championships but at least in Saturday’s matchup in The Greenhouse, a hot shooting club and turnovers overrode the defensive effort as the Barton Community College men’s basketball team couldn’t contain the Saints in Seward County Community College’s 86-82 victory. The Cougars, one of the top defensive teams in the Jayhawk, not only turned the ball over a season high times but failed to hold the Saints’ top rated offense under 50% shooting for the second time this season. Getting some help in other conference results, the third straight loss only dropped the Cougars one spot in the standings at 9-8 and 17-11 while Seward County leap frogged Barton into fifth place at 8-7 and 18-8 on the season. Still controlling its destiny to host a first round region playoff game, Barton will play its final regular season home contest this coming Wednesday against Cloud County Community College. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. or twenty-minutes after the conclusion of sophomore recognition taking place between the women’s and men’s contests.

Dentmond’s buzzer beater completes Cougars comeback victory

The Barton Community College men?s basketball erased a nine point late deficit Wednesday night at Garden City Community College but needed a tip-in at the buzzer for the final hurdle in the 79-77 victory. Winning by the same identical score as Monday night?s victory, the script was nearly the same again as Dequandre Dentmond seized his second straight late opportunity tipping in the game winner before the horn sounded giving the Cougars its third straight win at the Dennis Perryman Gymnasium. The victory looms large for the Cougars moving Barton up the conference standings to fourth at 9-5 and 17-8 overall while Garden City slides to the eighth spot at 6-8 and 14-11. Next up for the Cougars will be another pivotal conference matchup on Saturday hosting Dodge City Community College who trails Barton by a half a game at 8-5 and 17-7. Tip off time is set for approximately 7:30 p.m. or immediately following the Hall of Fame recognition ceremony taking place prior.

Barton men dominate Cloud County for second largest win in Concordia

In one of its most dominating victories of the season the Barton Community College men’s basketball went on the road Wednesday night snapping a three game losing streak returning home with a 87-61 win at Cloud County Community College. The twenty-six point margin of victory in Concordia was the second largest in the seventy-two game series since Barton’s fifty-three point win back in the 1999-2000 season. The much needed halt to the recent skid improves Barton to 7-4 in conference play and 15-7 overall while Cloud County falls to 1-10 in the Jayhawk and 8-14 on the season. The Cougars will have short time to feel good as the next two home games bring in traditional Jayhawk conference powers Hutchinson Community College and Coffeyville Community College. The No. 15 ranked Blue Dragons arrive on Saturday for Homecoming and Pink Out Night while two days later the Ravens visit the Barton Gym. Tip-off times for both contests slated for 7:30 p.m.

Flashbacks to old school Jayhawk Conference basketball broke out at the Barton Gym Saturday afternoon with the Barton Community College men’s basketball coming out on the short end of a 79-77 battle with Seward County Community College. Trailing by eighteen points in the contest, the Cougars battled back through the midst of four combined technical fouls taking a late three-point lead before dropping its third straight loss. Barton falls to 6-4 in the rugged Jayhawk and 14-7 overall while the nationally receiving votes Saints improve to 6-4 and 16-5 on the season. Conference leading Cougars control throughout in nineteen point win over Garden City

The Barton Community College men's basketball team bounced back from its lone conference loss leading from the opening possession in running away with an 84-65 victory Wednesday night over Garden City Community College in the Barton Gym. The Cougars scored the game's first eight points racing out to a 14-2 lead on the way to an eighteen point halftime lead not allowing the Busters to within seven the rest of the contest. The victory earned Head Coach Craig Fletchall his 100th conference win at Barton and keeps the Cougars atop the Jayhawk standings at 6-1 and 14-4 on the season while Garden City suffers its fourth straight loss falling to 3-5 in conference and 11-8 overall. Barton will be back in action this Saturday in a 3:00 p.m. tip at the Dodge City Civic Center taking on Dodge City Community College fresh off an 85-79 victory at No. 10 Hutchinson Community College.

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team picked up its third conference road victory roaring back from an early eleven point deficit to win 80-72 at Allen County Community College Saturday afternoon in Iola, Kansas. The Cougars erased a five point halftime deficit with nine straight within a 16-4 stretch in the opening seven minutes of second half action building a ten point lead with late free throws sealing the eight point victory. The fifth straight win improves Barton to 4-0 in conference play and 12-3 on the season while dropping Allen County to 1-4 and 9-6 overall. The Cougars will open the home portion of the 2016 schedule this Wednesday as Independence Community College comes to the Barton Gym for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team owned the final six minutes of Wednesday night’s Jayhawk Conference opener closing on a 15-0 run knocking off host Pratt Community College 68-52. Snapping a two game skid at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena, Barton improves to 9-3 on the season dropping Pratt to 7-4. The Cougars will head to El Dorado on Saturday for their next contest playing at Butler Community College in a 4:00 p.m. tip at the Power Plant.

Bouncing back from a disappointing and uninspiring loss on Friday, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team scored the first twelve points setting the tone in the 86-72 victory Saturday night over Brown Mackie College. Splitting the weekend games at the Barton Gym of the Best Western Booster Club Thanksgiving Classic, the Cougars wrapped up non-conference play improving to 8-3. Barton will now turn attention to the rugged Jayhawk Conference grind opening with consecutive road games beginning Wednesday at Pratt Community College followed by a Saturday trip Butler Community College.

Trailing for only thirty-two seconds Friday night at the Barton Gym, the Barton Community College men's basketball team took care of business going on to an 86-69 victory over Hesston College at the Barton Gym. Leading by only three with six minutes left in the first half, the Cougars closed out the half on a 17-5 stretch then went on a 13-0 run midway through the second half in coasting to its seventh straight victory. Improving to 7-2 on the season, Barton will have a week off from competition before hosting the Best Western Booster Club Classic Thanksgiving Classic on November 27-28.

Barton men’s basketball gets program win No. 1000, Cougars cruise to 124-72 victory

One year ago the Barton Community College men's basketball team put up historic scoring numbers against McPherson College junior varsity. Tuesday night at the Barton Gym the Cougars again made school history against the Bulldogs picking up win No. 1000 in the program’s forty-seventh year of competition with a 124-72 victory. Barton raced out to a 7-0 lead then put together three stretches of ten or more unanswered points to at the break 72-30. Had not for an early first half injury of one Cougar, each player saw more than ten minutes of court time throughout the game and contributed in the scoring column as Barton cruised in the second half to its fifth straight win. The Cougars improve to 6-2 on the season with 2015 NJCAA Division II national qualifier Hesston College coming to the Barton Gym for a 7:30 p.m. tip on Friday.
