Four Cougar Basketball players headed to the next level

Four players from the Barton Community College men’s basketball team have committed to play next season at the four year level. Jordan Windholz will stay in Kansas joining the NAIA Bulldogs of McPherson College while three others will be exiting the state to the NCAA Division II level. Mangisto Deng was the first of the Cougars to sign a letter of intent getting his next level ticket to New Mexico Highlands University while Eddie Hunt signed with Limestone College in South Carolina and most recently, Derek Dorn will be returning to the northeast part of the nation continuing his career at Caldwell University in New Jersey.

Two Barton Community College men’s basketball players recently received post-season honors on the All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) Division team with one landing on the All-Region VI Division I team. Sophomore Derek Dorn headlined the pair earning second team honors on both the conference and region teams while fellow sophomore Dequandre Dentmond garnering All-Conference honorable mention honors.

Despite a late second half rally, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team suffered one of the worst shooting nights of the season Thursday night at the Barton Gym spelling doom as Coffeyville Community College held on for a 66-63 victory. The loss ends the No. 6 seeded Cougars’ season at 18-13 while the No. 11 seeded Ravens improves to 16-15 advancing to the quarterfinal round of the Region VI tournament.

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team ran up against the hottest team in the region Saturday night at the Sports Arena as No. 7 ranked Hutchinson Community College rolled in second half play for a 94-77 victory. Trailing by six at the break Barton battled back to tie it at forty eight before the Blue Dragons put together a 17-4 run breaking the game open with the Cougars never able to recover. The loss ends the regular season for Barton at 9-8 in conference play and 18-12 on the season while Hutchinson won its tenth straight to control its destiny for the conference title Monday at Garden City improving to 15-3 and 26-3 on the season. Barton will next turn its sights on the Region VI playoffs as the Cougars earned a first round home game set for Thursday, February 25, in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off against an opponent yet to be determined.

It wasn’t an award winning style point performance for the Barton Community College men’s basketball team but the Cougars dominated the paint Wednesday night at the Barton Gym earning a 66-57 win over Cloud County Community College. The Cougars’ twenty rebound advantage aided by a near 89% effort from the free throw line kept the T-birds at arm’s length as Barton led wire-to-wire in snapping a three game slide. Improving to 9-7 in conference play and 18-11 on the season the Cougars jumped back into fifth place in the standings while Cloud County sinks to 2-15 in the Jayhawk and 9-19 overall. Barton will next play its final regular season contest this Saturday traveling to No. 7 ranked Hutchinson Community College for a 7:30 p.m. tip at the Sports Arena. The Cougars will begin Region VI tournament action on Thursday, February 25, on their home court against an opponent yet to be determined.

Last minute three-pointer knocks off Cougars

The one that got away seems to be an all too familiar theme with this year’s Barton Community College men’s basketball team as the Cougars’ struggles at home continued dropping a 74-71 battle to Dodge City Community College. Having snuck out with victories in its past two games, the Cougars led for most of Saturday’s Hall of Fame night’s contest but a three-point in the final minute proved the difference in the Conquistadors stealing their first victory at the Barton Gym since 2008. The loss flip-flopped Barton and Dodge City in the conference standings dropping the Cougars to fifth at 9-6 and 17-9 on the season while the Conquistadors jumped into the fourth slot at 9-5 and 18-7. Next up for the Cougars will be a two-game road stretch beginning with Wednesday’s 8:00 p.m. tip-off at Colby Community College before next Saturday’s trip to Seward County Community College. Barton’s next and final home game will come Wednesday, February 17, against Cloud County Community College.

One year ago the Barton Community College men's basketball team put up historic scoring numbers against McPherson College junior varsity. Tuesday night at the Barton Gym the Cougars again made school history against the Bulldogs picking up win No. 1000 in the program’s forty-seventh year of competition with a 124-72 victory. Barton raced out to a 7-0 lead then put together three stretches of ten or more unanswered points to at the break 72-30. Had not for an early first half injury of one Cougar, each player saw more than ten minutes of court time throughout the game and contributed in the scoring column as Barton cruised in the second half to its fifth straight win. The Cougars improve to 6-2 on the season with 2015 NJCAA Division II national qualifier Hesston College coming to the Barton Gym for a 7:30 p.m. tip on Friday.
