Four Cougar Basketball players headed to the next level

Four players from the Barton Community College men’s basketball team have committed to play next season at the four year level. Jordan Windholz will stay in Kansas joining the NAIA Bulldogs of McPherson College while three others will be exiting the state to the NCAA Division II level. Mangisto Deng was the first of the Cougars to sign a letter of intent getting his next level ticket to New Mexico Highlands University while Eddie Hunt signed with Limestone College in South Carolina and most recently, Derek Dorn will be returning to the northeast part of the nation continuing his career at Caldwell University in New Jersey.

Cougars dominate the paint in 66-57 victory over Cloud County

It wasn’t an award winning style point performance for the Barton Community College men’s basketball team but the Cougars dominated the paint Wednesday night at the Barton Gym earning a 66-57 win over Cloud County Community College. The Cougars’ twenty rebound advantage aided by a near 89% effort from the free throw line kept the T-birds at arm’s length as Barton led wire-to-wire in snapping a three game slide. Improving to 9-7 in conference play and 18-11 on the season the Cougars jumped back into fifth place in the standings while Cloud County sinks to 2-15 in the Jayhawk and 9-19 overall. Barton will next play its final regular season contest this Saturday traveling to No. 7 ranked Hutchinson Community College for a 7:30 p.m. tip at the Sports Arena. The Cougars will begin Region VI tournament action on Thursday, February 25, on their home court against an opponent yet to be determined.

Barton men drop conference battle of polar opposites

It’s said defense wins championships but at least in Saturday’s matchup in The Greenhouse, a hot shooting club and turnovers overrode the defensive effort as the Barton Community College men’s basketball team couldn’t contain the Saints in Seward County Community College’s 86-82 victory. The Cougars, one of the top defensive teams in the Jayhawk, not only turned the ball over a season high times but failed to hold the Saints’ top rated offense under 50% shooting for the second time this season. Getting some help in other conference results, the third straight loss only dropped the Cougars one spot in the standings at 9-8 and 17-11 while Seward County leap frogged Barton into fifth place at 8-7 and 18-8 on the season. Still controlling its destiny to host a first round region playoff game, Barton will play its final regular season home contest this coming Wednesday against Cloud County Community College. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. or twenty-minutes after the conclusion of sophomore recognition taking place between the women’s and men’s contests.

Last minute three-pointer knocks off Cougars

The one that got away seems to be an all too familiar theme with this year’s Barton Community College men’s basketball team as the Cougars’ struggles at home continued dropping a 74-71 battle to Dodge City Community College. Having snuck out with victories in its past two games, the Cougars led for most of Saturday’s Hall of Fame night’s contest but a three-point in the final minute proved the difference in the Conquistadors stealing their first victory at the Barton Gym since 2008. The loss flip-flopped Barton and Dodge City in the conference standings dropping the Cougars to fifth at 9-6 and 17-9 on the season while the Conquistadors jumped into the fourth slot at 9-5 and 18-7. Next up for the Cougars will be a two-game road stretch beginning with Wednesday’s 8:00 p.m. tip-off at Colby Community College before next Saturday’s trip to Seward County Community College. Barton’s next and final home game will come Wednesday, February 17, against Cloud County Community College.
