Barton men's golf places 4th to open season at Carmichael Cup #GoBarton
Gemzell finishes a stroke out of first, team begins season with sub-300 round.
The Barton Community College men's golf team teed off its 2025–26 season with a solid showing at the Carmichael Cup Tournament placing 4th in the one-round event held Tuesday at Salina's Municipal Golf Course.
Weather washed out Monday's scheduled opening round, trimming the tournament to a single 18 holes. The Cougars posted a 5-over 289, just three strokes back of runner-up Garden City Community College and Sterling College's 287 scores, and seven behind champion Park University's 2-under 282.
A trio of sophomores led Barton's placings, Ted Gemzell was just a stroke out from the title in finishing tied for 3rd overall of the 66-man field by firing a 2-under 68 built on an eagle at No. 7 and a pair of birdies making the turn at 3-under par.
Matteu Cauvin-Piacentini also had a strong front nine with a trio of birdies but was offset by three blue numbers to card an even-par 70 in joining Gemzell in the top ten with a tie for 8th place.
Cooper Lucke led the team rolling in five birdies, but was offset by six bogeys and a double to finish tied for 24th contributing a 73 (+3).
Newcomer Phattarapol Ongla and sophomore Wintakorn Suwanmuang each signed for 74s (+4) to round out the scoring lineup. Ogla overcame a double bogey with a pair of birdies to help steady his round as Suwanmuang's double was overtaken by a trio of red numbers.
Competing as individuals, freshman Drew Ricke and sophomore Talon Reynolds each concluded their rounds with birdies, Ricke finishing 36th with a carded a 76 (+6) followed by Reynolds' 79 (+9) for 48th.
The Cougars return to competition next Monday and Tuesday September 16–17 for the 11th Annual Central Kansas Classic hosted at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson.
