Cougar women post 2-1 weekend, C. Ribeiro sweeps sprints on men's side at Community College Quad
The Barton Community College swimming teams opened the back half of their schedule Saturday at the Community College Quad in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The meet featured a combined team scoring format while also being contested as a series of head-to-head duals against Iowa Western Community College, Iowa Lakes Community College, and Iowa Central Community College.
The Barton women posted a 2-1 record in dual competition, earning wins over Iowa Lakes (87-32) and Iowa Central (84-52) while falling to Iowa Western (158-41). On the men's side, the Cougars finished 1-2, defeating Iowa Lakes (128-82) while dropping close decisions to Iowa Western (165-84) and Iowa Central (127-110).
Men's Recap
A dominant sprint performance from Caio Ribeiro led the Barton men, as the freshman captured three individual victories and spearheaded multiple Cougar-heavy podium finishes.
C. Ribeiro swept the sprint freestyle events, winning the 50-yard freestyle (21.70), 100-yard freestyle (46.90), and 200-yard freestyle (1:39.40). His victory in the 50 free highlighted a Barton-heavy podium sweep, as Ricardo Marques and Joao Ribeiro joined him in the top three, while the 100 free saw the Cougars place first, second, fourth, and fifth overall.
Barton added another individual victory in the 100-yard butterfly, where Ricardo Marques topped the field, leading a four-Cougar contingent with teammates finishing sixth, seventh, and eighth.
In the distance events, Mateo Wallet led Barton with a runner-up finish in the 500-yard freestyle, touching in 5:05.24.
The 200-yard freestyle relay of Wallet, Marques, J. Ribeiro, and C. Ribeiro capped the day's final event by claiming top honors with a new personal-best stoppage of 1:27.06, ranking ninth-fastest in program history.
Additional personal-best performances came from Marques in the 50 freestyle (21.78), Lautaro Caspe in the 50 breaststroke (37.98), and J. Ribeiro (59.43) and Connor Watson (1:03.65) in the 100 IM.
Women's Recap
Despite competing as a five-squad lineup, the Barton women turned in a 2-1 dual record, highlighted by one event victory, three runner-up finishes, and two relay podium performances.
Avery Stewart led the way as Barton's lone individual winner, capturing the 50-yard backstroke (30.38). The freshman also added a runner-up finish in the 50-yard freestyle (27.80), highlighting a trio of Cougars placing inside the top eight, with additional fifth and eighth-place finishes.
MaKayla Baxter followed with a pair of second-place finishes, touching the wall runner-up in both the 100-yard backstroke and 500-yard freestyle. Baxter's backstroke effort (1:12.14) marked a season-best performance, while her 500 freestyle (6:19.12) highlighted another Barton-heavy result as Jocelyn Hamilton added a fourth-place finish (6:59.36).
Adding to the podium performances, Katy Alvarez delivered a runner-up showing in the 50-yard breaststroke (35.61).
On the relay side, Barton posted a pair of third-place finishes, as both the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay closed the meet on the podium.
Barton will have a three week layoff before competing in the Last Chance Meet on February 7, held virtually at the Barton Pool, before turning its focus toward the NJCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, scheduled for March 4-7 in Fort Pierce, Florida.
