Katrina Roenfeldt of the Barton Community College women’s basketball team capped her stellar career as a Lady Cougar earning two post-season honors, named to the Division I first team of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) while earning second team honors in the Division I of Region VI.

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team had their season come to an end in the Region VI quarterfinals Monday at Park City’s Hartman Arena as the Lady Cougars succumbed to the pressure of No. 2 ranked Hutchinson Community College 63-44. Barton concludes the season 17-15 under first-year Head Coach Alan Clark while the 31-1 Blue Dragons advance to Tuesday’s 1:00 p.m. semifinal round against Cowley College.

It took overtime but the gritty Barton Community College women’s basketball team advanced past Northwest Kansas Technical College 85-81 Thursday night at the Barton Gym in its first round matchup advancing to Monday’s quarterfinals of the Region VI Tournament. Handing the Lady Mavericks just its second loss in ending Northwest Tech’s season at 28-2, the 17-14 and seventh seeded Lady Cougars advance to Park City’s Hartman Arena for a 3:00 p.m. matchup with No. 2 seeded and ranked Hutchinson Community College.

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team closed out the 2017 regular season Monday night with a 91-70 victory over Neosho County Community College. The Lady Cougars jumped out to a 14-2 and never looked back increasing the lead out to sixteen after the first ten minutes to cruise to the victory. Ending the Panthers regular season at 10-20 and 7-19 in conference play, Barton concludes the regular season at 16-14 while its 13-13 conference mark to finish the Jayhawk grind earned the Lady Cougars another game on the L.T. and Sheila Fleske Court in hosting a first round Region VI playoff game on Thursday. In a 5:30 p.m. tip-off with free admission and $1 hot dogs, the Lady Cougars will host the 28-1 Lady Mavericks of Northwest Kansas Technical College for the right to advance to Monday’s 3:00 p.m. quarterfinal round at Park City’s Hartman Arena.

As was the case in the previous season’s meeting, the Barton Community College women’s basketball team again had a late decisive stretch go against their favor Saturday night sending the Lady Cougars to a 58-49 loss at Coffeyville Community College. Barton drops to 12-13 in conference play and 15-14 while Coffeyville keeps pace for the third seed with a 19-6 record in the Jayhawk and 20-8 overall. Barton will conclude the regular season with a 5:30 p.m. tip on Monday hosting Neosho County Community College in “Sophomore Night” at the Barton Gym for a final tune-up before hosting a first round Region VI playoff game on Thursday.

As frigid from the field as Barton was on the night shooting a season low 25% from the field, Cloud County was the flip side of the pillow connecting on 54% of their shots including beating the Lady Cougars down the floor for a twenty-point transition advantage. Having played the Blue Dragons to within five earlier in the season at the Barton Gym, the Lady Cougars held a 24-23 second quarter lead until a 10-3 run to close the half put Hutchinson out front by six at halftime. The Blue Dragons continued to own the final twenty minutes holding Barton to its lowest output of the season and running its winning streak over Barton to sixteen straight. Having took a loss in Dodge City back in early December, the taste hasn’t set well with the Lady Cougars as Barton held the Conquistadors to just fifteen first half points before scoring thirty-four of their own in the third period as seven players reached double figures in hitting the century mark for the first time of the season. The victory helps solidifies Barton’s standing to host a first round playoff game improving to 11-10 in the Jayhawk and 14-11 overall. Dodge City, who played the contest with just five players, dropped their third straight to fall to 4-17 in conference play and 4-21 overall. Led by the seven three-pointers from Katrina Roenfeldt, the Lady Cougars answered a 14-0 Pirate run scoring the final five points of regulation getting a trey from Roenfeldt, a defensive stop by reserve Juliana Chagas, and a Regan Unruh runner with two seconds remaining to force the overtime. Barton continued the momentum into the extra frame tacking on four more points then held on the rest of the way to sweep the season series and snap a two-game slide in Independence. Leading the conference in offensive rebounds, the Lady Cougars were held to a season low four offensive boards but trailed by one possession before its twenty-sixth turnover of the game sealed the fate with nine seconds to play. The loss drops Barton to 8-8 in conference play and 11-9 on the season while Butler’s second straight win improves the Grizzlies to 11-5 in Jayhawk play and 14-5 overall. The Lady Cougars shot just 26% percent in first half action leading to the deficit but heated up in second half play to 44% while limiting the Trojans to just seven points in each of the third and fourth quarters in pulling away for the win. The Barton Community College women's basketball team made the long trip to Chanute on Monday pulling away for a 78-52 victory at Neosho County Community College. Erasing an early four point deficit with a 9-2 spurt, the Lady Cougars never looked back in pulling away for the twenty-six point victory to keep their series unbeaten streak against the Lady Panthers unblemished at 19-0. The victory improved the Lady Cougars to 6-7 in conference play and 9-8 on the year while dropping Neosho to 3-10 and 6-11 overall. Barton will return to the court in two days as the Lady Cougars host Colby Community College in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off Wednesday at the Barton Gym.

Getting double-double performances from three players, the Lady Cougars utilized their outside scoring threat in first half action to lead by six but turned to the inside game in the final twenty minutes for an eighteen point differential in notching Barton’s first win in Pratt since the 2012 season. The victory also put an end to Barton’s three game losing streak improving the Lady Cougars to 5-6 in conference play and 8-7 on the season while sending Pratt to their third straight defeat dropping to 2-9 in the Jayhawk and 3-12 overall. After two road trips to begin the 2017 portion of the schedule, the Lady Cougars’ next game will be in the friendly confines of the Barton Gym with a Wednesday 5:30 p.m. tip-off against Coffeyville Community College.

Committing eight of their twenty-three turnovers in the third quarter resulting in a fifteen point T-bird lead, the Lady Cougars cut the deficit to four with two minutes remaining in the contest but couldn’t put any more on the board dropping their third straight game. The Lady Cougars fall to 4-6 in Jayhawk play while dropping to the .500 mark on the season at 7-7 as Cloud County improves to 7-3 and 10-3 on the year. The Barton Community College women’s basketball team gave the No. 10 ranked Hutchinson Community College a run for their money Saturday night at the Barton Gym but fell short in the upset bid losing 61-56. The Lady Cougars battled back from a fifteen point third quarter deficit going on a 13-0 run crossing into the fourth drawing to within two twice before a Blue Dragon 7-0 run provided the cushion Hutchinson would need. The loss sends Barton to the holiday break with a 4-5 conference record and 7-6 on the season while Hutchinson improves to 8-1 in the Jayhawk and 10-1 on the year. The Lady Cougars’ next action will come Wednesday, January 4, as Barton travels to Cloud County Community College for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off in resuming the conference season.

Striking for nearly 44% beyond the arc Saturday afternoon at the Barton Gym, the Barton Community College women's basketball team picked up their second straight victory by defeating Independence Community College 71-55. Despite shooting just 31% from the field, the Lady Cougars made up the difference shooting over 83% from the charity stripe and getting a combined 9-of-17 long distance shooting from Regan Unruh and Katrina Roenfeldt. The victory improves Barton’s conference mark to 4-3 and 7-4 on the year while dropping Independence to 2-5 and 4-6 on the season. The Lady Cougars have two more games remaining on the pre-Christmas schedule beginning with a Wednesday trip to Dodge City Community College followed by a Saturday date with nationally ranked Hutchinson Community College. In a near repeat of last year’s meeting at the Greenhouse, the Barton Community College women's basketball team had no early answer for the Saints’ onslaught as No. 20 Seward County Community College kept the hammer down forcing twenty-eight turnovers for an 87-48 victory. Knocking down their first twelve shots for an 80% first quarter shooting display, the Saints buried the Lady Cougars to hand Barton its second straight conference loss and fourth straight in Liberal. Now 2-2 in Jayhawk play, Barton drops to 5-3 on the season while Seward County remains at the top of the standings improving to 4-0 and 6-0 on the year. Following a short break for Thanksgiving, the Lady Cougars return to the court in preparation for Saturday’s home contest against No. 17 Cowley College. The Barton Community College women’s basketball team knocked off No. 25 nationally ranked Iowa Western Community College 79-77 in the opening night of the Best Western and Cougar Booster Club Classic held Friday at the Barton Gym. Trailing by three after the first ten minutes, the Lady Cougars regained a one point lead by halftime before having the Reivers take a two point lead to the final quarter. A three point play with 7:22 remaining gave Barton a lead they wouldn’t relinquish, building the advantage out to seven before holding off Iowa Western down the stretch for the victory. Improving to 2-0 on the season, Barton will next take on nationally receiving votes Northern Oklahoma College-Enid at 5:30 p.m. Saturday while Iowa Western looks to bounce back from their season opening loss with the 1:00 p.m. opening game versus the junior varsity squad from Washburn University.

Led by the combined forty-one point effort by sophomores Katrina Roenfeldt and Regan Unruh, a sixteen point edge in the second ten minutes in building a twenty-one point halftime lead in cruising to the win opening the Alan Clark coaching era. Coming up for the Lady Cougars is the weekend’s Best Western Cougar Booster Club Classic at the Barton Gym against two nationally ranked opponents taking on No. 25 Iowa Western Community College on Friday and nationally receiving votes Northern Oklahoma College-Enid on Saturday. Tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. for both contests.
