Alvarado leads Barton women's golf historic round to capture Carmichael Cup title #GoBarton
Diana Alvarado wins her first collegiate event leading the program's third 300 round in history.
The Barton Community College women's golf team opened its fall season in winning fashion Tuesday, carding a 20-over 300 to capture the Carmichael Cup held at the Salina's Municipal Golf Course.
The Cougars' score was one for the record books, just the third time Barton's women have recorded a 300 round in chasing the best team score of 298 set by the 2022-23 squad.
Originally scheduled as a two-day tournament, weather canceled Monday's opening round leaving the field with one round. The Cougars seized the chance with a balanced lineup, winning by 21 strokes over Garden City Community College's 41-over 321, while MidAmerica Nazarene placed third at 71-over 351. Bethel (KS) was fourth at +97 with Bethany (KS) fifth at +145.
Sophomore Diana Alvarado won her first collegiate event, firing a 1-under 69 powered by a pair of eagles at Nos. 5 and 7 and answering late bogeys at 15 and 17 with birdies on 16 and 18.
Freshman Panalee Prachavittayagon debutted in third place with a 74 (+4) as sophomore Chomchanok Laparojkit tied for fourth at 78 (+8).
Two strokes behind in 6th was Suri Rocha Orozco's inaugural round carding a pair of front-side birdies for a 79 (+9) while sophomore Giovanna Tabanag also tagged a birdie towards an 83 (+13) for 12th place.
Three Cougars competed individually, Alexandria Hunt leading in 10th place at 81 (+11) as fellow freshman Alexandria Baxter tied Tabanag for 12th at 83 (+13) and sophomore Kadynce Nash closed in the 15th position with an 85 (+15).
The Cougars' next action comes Monday in the two-day 11th Annual Central Kansas Classic held at McPherson's Turkey Creek Golf Course.
