Barton Wresting opens 2017 season with five placers #GoBarton

The Barton Community College wrestling program opened its 2017-18 season this past Sunday in the Oklahoma City University Open, compiling a 46-36 record amongst its twenty-one entered wrestlers coming away with two champions within its five placers of the freshman-sophomore division.

Returning to the competition mat after a year layoff, Great Bend's Kade Sander and red-shirt sophomore Brix Brickey each captured titles in their respective class.

Receiving a bye in the first round, Sander dominated each of his four 157 division matches on the way to the title with two falls to go along with a pair of technical falls. Pinning Tyriere Mickens of Bacone College 2:30 into his first match before rolling Northeast Oklahoma A&M's Zeke Rubio 17-2 in a tech fall. Sander made short work in the semifinals taking just 1:25 to pancake unattached wrestler Tracy Reeder then seized the title with an 18-1 tech fall over Fort Hays State University's Anthony Scantlin.

Coming up a victory short of the All-American rounds at the NJCAA Championships last season, Lindsborg's Brickey was nearly as impressive in the 285 division. Taking his first two matches by fall in a combined 39 seconds, :27 over Arkansas Baptist's Marquise Peele and :12 over Lyon College's John Bentley, Brickey outscored unattached Cornelius Putnam 8-6 in a tough match to the semifinals. Brickey then took just 1:18 to dispel Brian Andrews of Northeast Oklahoma to march into the finals to capture the title by shutting out Newman University's Thor Balavage in a 2-0 decision.

Two freshman Cougars brought home a runner-up and third place finish in the 165 division as Russell's Kelton Suchy met the division's top ranked in the finals taking a 16-1 tech fall loss to Northeast Oklahoma's Wyatt Jordan for the title while on the back side of the bracket Yukon, Oklahoma, native Gage McBride took the third place match with a 19-5 major decision over Cowley College's Shawn Dent.

Joining Sander's efforts to conclude the '16 season and Brickey's '17 accomplishments, David Kelly also came up a victory short to make the All-American round last season as the Wichita sophomore also began his season on a promising note. Kelly took down his first 174 division opponents by fall nearly as quick as Brickey did on his first two opponents. Beginning the day with a :32 fall over Lyon College's Almog Cohen, Kelly then bettered himself with a :26 pancake of New Mexico Highlands' Kenneth Yara. A mistake would cost Kelly in the semifinal round being bounced to the back side of the draw with a 1:18 fall to unattached Kalin Winkler. Kelly regrouped with a 14-4 major decision over Lance Kilgore of New Mexico Highlands before coming up on the short end of a 13-4 major decision to Northeast Oklahoma's Jacob Mintzmyer for third place.
