Barton Wrestling places seven at Golden Norseman Invite.
The Barton Community College Wrestling team took a break this weekend from conference duals, competing in the Golden Norseman Invitational held in Miami, Oklahoma.
The Cougars finished the one-day open tournament with an overall record of 30-22, capturing an individual title and six other placers including a pair of runner-ups.
Drew Burgoon began his championship run defeating Pratt's Braydon Lemuz with a 17-2 technical fall before earning a 6-3 decision over Neosho County's Morgan Potts. Burgoon then won his semifinal bout on another three point 9-6 decision over Caleb Nathan of Western Wyoming before coming out on top 3-2 for the tile against Cowley's Brayden Strachan.
A pair of Cougars' title hopes came to a pair of the nation's top ranked opponents from Pratt, Drew Liles to Michael Spangler in the 125 division and Izaiah Del Valle to Jake Beeson in the 149 division. Liles' rolled through his first two matches on 3:37 and 1:16 back pinnings before knocking off 8th ranked Garret Ricks of Western Wyoming College on a 6-2 decision. Del Valle also began his march with a fall, back flattening Neosho County's Jose Centeno in 2:45 before beating a pair of Cowley College competitors 5-0 and 7-6.
Cody Liles and Dawson Chavez earned third place in the 149 and 157 divisions respectively, Liles going 4-1 on the day and Chavez going 3-1. Chavez took on two nationally ranked opponents from Western Wyoming, dropping a 7-2 semifinal decision to 157 top ranked Anthony Herrera before wrapping up the day with a 12-8 decision knocking off 165 division 5th ranked McKay Foy.
Bryan Ford and Davontai Robinson each had to settle for fourth place against another pair of Western Wyoming ranked opponents. Ford was 6:31 into his 174 third place match before injury defaulting to 8th ranked Mason Christianson, with Robinson dropping his 184 division third place match to 3rd ranked Andrew Nicholson on a 2:35 fall.
The Cougars return to dual action on Tuesday with a trip to Colby taking on the host Trojans and Labette Community College.
