Bio
Former Cougar tennis player Lyle Stickney is in his 17th season leading the Barton tennis program.
During his tenure at Barton, Stickney’s women’s team, the Lady Cougars, have made ten straight national tournament appearances and eleven overall under his leadership (2013, 2015–19, 2021–25), producing best finishes of seventh place in both 2021 and 2024. On the men’s side, the Cougars are coming off a national runner-up finish and have qualified for the national tournament nine times (2014, 2017–19, 2021–25), including five consecutive top-eight finishes, with the program’s previous highest placement being a fourth-place finish to conclude the 2022 season.
The 2020 season was shortened due to COVID-19, leaving the women ranked 10th and the men eighth nationally.
Last season, Stickney’s short-handed, 13th-ranked squad battled through the National Tournament, going 5–1 in opening-round matches, including a 4–0 mark in singles play. Competing with just four athletes, the Lady Cougars finished with an 8–9 overall tournament record while placing 19th nationally.
Ranked No. 22 in the final ITA team standings, Vitoria Campigotto concluded the season as the No. 28-rated singles player in the NJCAA. In doubles play, Campigotto and partner Vania Dotse finished the year ranked No. 13 nationally.
Continuing to excel academically under Stickney’s leadership, the Cougars posted a 3.36 overall team GPA, ranking 23rd out of 34 teams nationally above the 3.0 GPA threshold.
Coaching honors for Stickney include the 2019 Wilson ITA Women’s District III Coach of the Year award and the 2021 Herschel Stephens Coaching Award for outstanding service and dedication to the NJCAA Tennis Coaches’ Association.
Stickney entered the coaching ranks at Ellinwood High School, leading the girls program beginning in 1989 and previously serving as head coach of the boys program from 1995–2009. During that span, he guided 57 boys and 84 girls to state tournament qualifications, collecting four regional titles and six top-five state finishes on the boys side, including three team runner-up finishes, while the girls program added six regional titles and seven top-five state placings. In 2011, his Lady Eagles captured the Class 3-2-1A Team Championship. Stickney was also twice named 3A Coach of the Year.
An Ellinwood, Kansas native, Stickney continued his playing career at Fort Hays State University, graduating in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
