The Barton Community College women's track and field team won nine events this weekend as a final day charge came up six points short in placing runner-up at the KJCCC/Region VI Outdoor Championships hosted by Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kansas.
The Cougars reset five facility records in their two days of competition, had thirteen personal bests, and compiled twenty-four scoring performances for 172 points. Barton's total was just six shy of Cloud County Community College's 178 points and 72 points ahead of third place Butler Community College.
In the KJCCC West scoring, Cloud County won the title with 256 points as Barton compiled 211 points and third place Hutchinson accumulated 72 points.
In addition to the team hardware, Nia Robinson was voted the Female Field Athlete of the Meet in winning two events and placing runner-up in a third event.
Barton will conclude the season next week in a three-day trip to Levelland, Texas, for the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Championships held May 11-13 hosted by South Plains College.
Robinson won her first of two championships on Friday with a program record breaking long jump of 6.56m (21-06.25). The mark surpassed Dionne Rose's 6.49m (21-03.50) set in 1990 and bettered Jasmine Simmons' facility record of 6.16m (20-02.50) achieved in 2009.
Placing second in Saturday's triple jump at 12.28m (40-03.50) to teammate Annia Ashley's personal best 12.46m (40-10-50), the duo were back at it in the high jump where Robinson out ascended the competition to a 1.66m (5-05.25) height with Ashley taking second at 1.61m (5-03.25.
Fellow jumping teammate Shemia Odaine gave Barton a 1-2-3 placing in Friday's long jump with a 5.78m (18-11.75) splash in the sand on the way to a 28 point weekend taking third with personal bests in the 100m and 200m before concluding the meet helping the 4x400m relay to the Region VI title.
Joining Odaine on the baton handoffs were Kayan Green, Sasha Brown and Lashanna Graham as the tandem clocked a season best 3:44.37 time to break the facility record by .29 seconds set by the Cougars' 2017 effort.
Graham and Green also claimed individual titles, Graham continuing her dominance of the 400m hurdles and Green winning the 800m. Graham, who just missed her school record by .29 seconds, shattered her facility record set back on March 27 by over two seconds in clocking a 57.66. Green held off a late charge in the two trips around the oval to take the title in 2:14.37 while Sasha Brown finished in 5th at 2:21.26. Earlier in the day, Green placed 4th in the 1500m in 4:48.66.
The Cougars picked up another hurdle title in the shorter 100m version, going 1-2 as Ayesha Nelson's personal best 14.08 time edge out Ashanti Harvey's best of 14.11.
Ana da Silva broke two facility records on her way to a pair of titles, the first coming in the shot put with a program second best effort of 16.03m (52-07.25) to also surpass former Cougar Cassandra Lee's 15.67m (51-05) facility record set in 2004. Silva later broke her own facility record set earlier in the season by winning the hammer throw with a 57.71m mark.
Fellow thrower Jada Sewell also had a solid meet with a personal best 43.63m (143-02) hammer throw to place third with Da Silva placing 7th, and a 5th placing in the discus and 7th in the shot put.
