Barton represented by trio of former Cougars at Tokyo Olympics
The long tradition of former Barton Community College student-athletes qualifying for the Olympics continues with the 2020 version of the Olympiad games currently underway through August 8 in Tokyo, Japan.
Three former members of the Barton track and field men's program will be competing as two-time Olympian Alonso Edward challenges in the 200m while first-time Olympians Samson Colebrooke and Phillip Lemonious compete in the 100m and 110m Hurdles respectively. Edward and Colebrooke are expected for additional consideration of his country's respective relay team participation as well.
Bahamas: Samson Colebrooke (Men's Athletics - 100m)
Jamaica: Phillip Lemonious (Men's Athletics - 110m Hurdles)
Panama: Alonso Edward (Men's Athletics - 200m)
Donning the Barton blue for the 2009 season, Edward will begin his 2nd Olympic games on Tuesday, August 3, after placing 7th in the 200m at the 2016 Rio games. A native of Panama City, Panama, Edward's holds the program record outdoor 200m time of 19.89, 3rd in the 100m at 9.97, and until the 2020 indoor season was the 200m leader at 20.69 until recent standout Caleb Boger was an eyelash better at the 2020 NJCAA Indoor Championships with a 20.68 time.
Colebrooke will be the first of the three former Cougars on the worldwide stage, competing Saturday, July 31, in the 100m. Native of Nassau, Bahamas, Colebrooke competed for the Cougars in the 2017 and 2018 seasons before continuing his academic and collegiate career at Purdue University. A program Top-20 performer in each of his indoor and outdoor sprint events, Colebrooke was an integral part of Barton's relay teams, posting a pair of program top ten times including the 2018 NJCAA Outdoor Championship in the Cougars' shocking come-from-behind 4x100m title.
Representing Jamaica and his hometown of Kingston on Tuesday, August 3, Lemonious began his collegiate career at Central Arizona before transferring to Barton for the 2019-20 season, then on to the University of Arkansas. Competing in just the indoor season due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Lemonious closed out his Barton career with the 2020 NJCAA National title capturing the 60m hurdle championship. Having run a program third best time of 7.75 earlier in the season, Lemonious won the title in a mere .05 seconds slower of his best by clocking a 7.80 helping the Barton men to their then third straight national runner-up finish.
