Cougars season ends in Region VI tournament
When the Barton County Community College baseball team walked off the field after its game with Coffeyville in the loser’s bracket of the Region VI baseball tournament, most of Wichita was a sleep. Some were getting up for the Monday morning’s work. It was 4:30 am at Lawrence Dumont Stadium. Unfortunately for Barton it was the last time they would walk off the field this year as the Cougars dropped a 7-1 decision to Coffeyville. Barton lost earlier the day in the opening round of the Region VI Championships to Colby, 7-3. It was a long day at Lawrence Dumont Stadium after Saturday – the original opening day – was rained out. Sunday – and into Monday morning – saw 6 games played starting at 9 am Sunday and ending at after 4 am Monday for more than 19 hours of baseball. It was a day that saw 3 of the top 4 seeds lose in the opening round. The Cougars end their season with a 34-23 record with their early morning loss.

Highlights
Coffeyville jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the game, scoring twice in the 1st with the help of a Barton error. The Red Ravens made it 3-0 in the 2nd with another run. Barton cut into the Red Raven in the top of the 3rd. Coffeyville leftfielder Johnny Roberts dropped a fly ball, allowing Robbie Adams to reach. That was followed by a pair of singles by Wade Gubbels and David Wilson to load the bases with 1 out. Tyler Metcalf drove in Adams with a fly out to center to make it 3-1.
The Red Ravens padded their lead with a single run in the 4th and 6th to increase their lead to 5-1. The Cougars showed signs of a rally in the 7th with the 1st 2 runners reaching base, but Barton failed to score in the inning. In the 8th Barton advanced a runner to 3rd, but left him stranded there as well. The Red Ravens added 2 runs in the 9th as Coffeyville stayed alive in the tournament.
Ryan Sheldon took the loss, allowing 4 runs in his 4-plus innings of work. The Cougars managed to collect 6 hits, but could only score the 1 run. For the day, Barton had 15 hits and 4 runs in the two games the Cougars lost. Barton committed more errors (5) than it scored runs.
In the loss to Colby, Barton scored the opening inning on an Adams home run, then did not score again until the 8th inning. In the meantime, Colby plated 4 runs to take a 4-1 lead on the Cougars. Barton made it interesting in the bottom of the 8th when Adams drove in 2 more runs with a double into the left field corner scoring Anthony Dreiling and Brent Biggs.
But the Cougars – who have won in its final at bat 6 times this season – didn't stay within 1 run of the Trojans for long. Colby put 3 more runs on the board in the top of the 9th to stretch its lead to 7-3 and earn in the win in the opening round of action Sunday afternoon. Brock Nehls took the loss for Barton, allowing 3 runs in his 7 innings of work. Biggs and Adams each had two hits in the game.
