Derrick was a 4 year letter winner and starter in the outfield for Wichita North High School. He hit .350 his senior year with 2 homeruns, while stealing 29 bases in 29 attempts. During his junior season, he batted .477 with 4 homeruns, and swiping 17 bases. He also earned All-City outfield honors.
