Cougar baseball splits at Dodge City

The Barton Community College baseball team split a doubleheader today in Dodge City capturing a 6-4 win in game one over Dodge City Community College before falling 14-4 to the Conquistadors in game two.  The split takes the Cougars to 21-16-1 on the season and 8-10 in conference play while Dodge City moves to 24-14 overall and 12-10 in Jayhawk play.  The teams will wrap the series on Sunday with first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Game One
The Cougars managed only five hits in the first game but two of those hits were the difference maker in the 6-4 win.  With Barton leading 2-1 in the fourth, Caleb Cherryholmes delivered his second home run of the season with a two-run shot to left field.   Scott Tyler made the most of his one-hit in the game driving a 2-2 pitch over the right field wall scoring two runs to increase the lead to 6-1 and add to his team lead in homeruns (5) and RBIs (44).

Justin Hersch sailed through the game until a rough patch in the fifth, giving way to Alexander Evans to close it out.  Hersch's five hit and four strikeout performance improved his season record to 3-1 while Evans picked up his sixth save.

Game Two
Jacob Richardson led off the Barton first with a double later scoring from a Trevor Turner fly out and Scott Tyler reaching on error.  From there it was all Conquistadors as Dodge City scored five in the second and five in the sixth to run rule the Cougars in the seventh inning.

Barton got a single run in the third and two in the seventh but each time the Conquistadors would answer.

Richardson went 2-3 with a double in the leadoff position but the Cougars were 2-12 in the meat of the order as no other Cougar had more than one hit.  Tyler drove in a single run in the third while Wilder Fajardo drove in two in the seventh with a double down the right field line.

Michael Turner took the loss dropping to 4-3 on the season going five innings giving up eight hits while striking out five.  Seven runs came across under Turner's watch with only four being earned as the Cougars committed five errors.
