Rivals 100 listed Whaley as the No. 7 overall player in the Class of 2001 and Midwest Hoops rated him No. 8 in the country. Fullcourt Magazine rated Whaley the second player in the Class of 2001 and PrepStars Magazine had him third. Midwest Hoops also quoted a scout as saying Whaley reminded him of a young Elvin Hayes. Whaley was invited to the NBA Players Association Camp this summer. Indiana Basketball News said Whaley impacts any program in American and should be the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Year.
The list of 4-year colleges after his services included Cincinnati, Kentucky, Georgetown, Michigan State, Missouri, and Syracuse. Whaley originally committed to Missouri before coming to Barton County.
"My assistant coach in high school, Lou Henry told me he felt Barton was the right fit for me," Whaley said. "He felt Coach Wolf was a good coach."
Whaley is also friends with Cougar teammate Omari Westley, who transferred to Barton from the National Champion Wabash Valley College last season.
"We went to a lot of camps together," Whaley said. "I'm excited to play on the same team with him finally. I think this team can be real good. I think we have a shot at the national title this year. But we have to buckle down and get serious about it."
