Momentum shift proves costly as Cougars suffer first defeat
For sixty-two minutes on Sunday in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the No. 13 ranked Barton Community College men’s soccer team was locked in a scoreless tie with No. 6 Iowa Western Community College. Unfortunately for the Cougars, the last twenty-eight minutes were something to leave in Iowa as Barton took their first defeat of the season in a resounding 4-0 loss to the host school. The 4-1-1 Cougars will have a few days to refocus before playing two conference road games this week. The Cougars will travel to Coffeyville Community College on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. game then make a return trip to southeast Kansas on Friday for a 4:00 p.m. game against Allen Community College.

In a much anticipated matchup between two nationally ranked teams, the game was deadlocked until an ill-advised red card on Barton's Armando Hipolito turned the momentum with twenty-eight minutes remaining. The No. 6 ranked Reivers took only four minutes to break the tie then added back-to-back goals at the seventy-ninth and eightieth minutes to blow the game open. Iowa Western added the final fourth goal with six minutes remaining as the Cougars surrendered four goals in eighteen minutes of play.
