Barton’s McCrillis and Campos earn conference award for second straight week
For the second straight week and third time this season, Barton Community College men’s soccer players Sam McCrillis and Mauricio Campos have been selected to receive the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Player of the Week honors. McCrillis, who also won the award in week one, headlines the Cougar attack while Campus, who won the award in week four, anchors the Barton defense in goal. Both players have helped the Cougar team to a No. 9 national ranking and the KJCCC Championship crown with their recent 4-0 shutout victory over No. 7 Cloud County Community College. With one game remaining in the regular season, Barton will look to tune up its attack Wednesday against Kansas City Kansas Community College at 4:00 p.m. at the Cougar Soccer/Track Complex. The Cougars will begin Region VI playoff action next Tuesday as they will host a first round game against an opponent yet to be determined.
Sam McCrillis
Considered Barton's main goal threat, sophomore Sam McCrillis scored only one goal in two contests but dished out five assists as the No. 9 ranked Cougars recorded back-to-back shutout victories including against the No. 7 team in the country. Against Pratt Community College last Wednesday, McCrillis pulled the hat-trick in his five point performance with three assists to go along with his unassisted goal through five Pratt defenders. Against defending NJCAA Champion and No. 7 ranked Cloud County Community College, McCrillis set up fellow teammate Ebu Camara for two early first half goals enroute to the 4-0 victory. For the season McCrillis is making his name in the Cougar soccer history books as he is in second place all-time in career assists (20) and third place in points scored (78).
Mauricio Campos
Freshman Mauricio Campos was solid in defense as he's been all season in keeping the No. 9 ranked Cougars unbeaten in conference play by recording back-to-back shutout victories including Saturday's 4-0 win against the No. 7 ranked and previously conference undefeated Cloud County Community College. Facing four shots on goal against the No. 7 T-birds, Campos rejected each shot and recorded his seventh shutout victory on the season ranking him sixth all-time for a single season.
