Bonilla wins defensive award, seven Lady Cougars earn post-season honors

The Barton Community College women's soccer team had seven players recently selected to the 2013 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference All-Conference team and one selection to the NSCAA/Continental Tire Junior College Division I All-West Region.  Headlining the selections were sophomores Olimpia Bonilla, who was selected the KJCCC Defensive Player of the Year, and Bianca Barron, who was selected to the NSCAA All-West Region Team.   Joining Bonilla on the KJCCC first team was freshman Millie York while sophomores Barron and Mariana Poveda were each named to the second team.  Sophomores Molly Hausmann and Stephanie Lomas joined freshman Ronnie Johnson on the honorable mention team to round out the Lady Cougars' honors.  The seven selections follow a six selection last season for second-year Head Coach Aaron Avila.  Named the Coach of the Year in his first season, Avila guided the Lady Cougars to a 13-4-1 record this season and a 11-1-1 mark in the Jayhawk Conference to finish tied for second in the conference.  Spending much of the season in the national polls, the Lady Cougars season came to an end for the second straight season in the Region VI semifinals, falling 1-0 to Johnson County Community College.  

Olimpia Bonilla
Olimpia Bonilla has been the anchor of a defensive line that only surrendered seventeen goals all season with five of those coming during the season's first two games.  Nicknamed the terminator for her ability to thwart offensive attacks throughout the back line, the 5'3" Bonilla read the game very well utilizing her speed and athleticism to challenge balls in the air and tackle hard. The Salt Lake City, Utah, native was also a strong leader with high skill level that elevated the Lady Cougars to a solid defensive team earning goalkeeper Stephanie Lomas four weekly conference goalkeeper of the week awards.  Bonilla's performance follows a solid freshman season of being named second team to both the All-Conference and All-Region VI teams.

Millie York
Millie York provided a keen soccer knowledge and toughness to the Lady Cougar defensive line that only surrendered seventeen goals all season with five coming during the season's first two games.  The 5'5" freshman transfer from Hutchinson Community College, brought a high level of technical ability and toughness to compliment Bonilla's speed.  Hailing from Hove, England, York played multiple positions throughout the season displaying her multi-dimensional level.  

Bianca Barron
Going down in Lady Cougar soccer history as one of the most skilled and profilic scorers to don a Barton uniform, Bianca Barron left her mark in multiple categories.  Despite being only 5'1", Barron utilized her exceptional ability to utilize her body to ward off defenders especially in drawing the attention of multiple defenders. Barron ranks second all-time in goals (51), fourth in points (118), and fifth in assists (16).  In addition to her career achievements, the West Jordan, Utah, native scored five goals three times in her career and recorded the sixth best single game performance in points (11) her freshman season.  A first team all-conference and all-region selection her freshman season after scoring 31 goals, Barron was a big surprise to other teams and was partnered up with another goalscorer which made it easier for her to get free and score goals.  During Barron's sophomore season, Barron was constantly the defensive focus of opponents and despite not having a scoring partner and having 2 or 3 players marked on her, Barron was still able to score 20 goals in eighteen games.  Barron capped her post-season honors with the NSCAA honor signifying her place as one of the top fourteen players in the West Region.

Mariana Poveda
Despite missing eight games her freshman season due to injury, Mariana Poveda follows her second team all-conference and all-region selection with another solid season to earn second team honors again.  The 5'2" midfielder from San Jose, Costa Rica, has been the Lady Cougars' best midfielder for the past two years.  Possessing complete knowledge of the game and the ability to distribute or shoot on all areas of the field, Poveda ranks sixth all-time on the Barton history books with 15 assists.  On and off the field, Poveda has a contagious smile been a leader to lift her teammates to a higher level and has been an integral part of Barton's successful seasons the past two years.

Molly Hausmann
Joining Barron on the front line attack, Molly Hausmann ranked second on the team with seven goals and third in points scored with fifteen.  Nicknamed "Big Game Hausmann", Hausmann often scored goals when Barton needed it the most and tied for the team lead with four game-winning goals, the most notable coming in Barton's 1-0 win at Hutchinson Community College.  The victory marked the first time Barton had defeated Hutchinson since 2007 and only the third time in Barton history.  The honorable mention award also marks the second straight year a Barton player from Columbus, Nebraska, has earned the award.  Teammate Hannah Fuchs, who missed this season due to injury, also won the award last season. 

Stephanie Lomas
A player who perhaps developed the most from high school to the end of her Barton career, Great Bend native Stephanie Lomas won four KJCCC  and two NJCAA Goalkeeper of the Week awards.  The 5'4" keeper surrendered only thirteen goals all season with five of those coming during the season's first two games.  Lomas left her mark on the Barton history books as well, leaving as the third highest rated keeper with eleven shutouts while teaming with freshman keeper Kacee Walsh to record two additional shutouts.  Lomas' most notable shutout coming in Barton's 1-0 win at Hutchinson Community College, marking the first time Barton had defeated Hutchinson since 2007 and the first shoutout against the Blue Dragons in eleven meetings.  

Ronnie Johnson
The lone true freshman to earn postseason awards, Ronnie Johnson played multiple positions on the field throughout the season.  The 5'7" defender from Midwest City, Oklahoma, also spent time on the front attack scoring three goals and recording two game winning plays.  Johnson's highlight week came mid-season scoring six points in two consecutive games, two goals coming against Kansas City Kansas Community College on September 15 and two assists coming against Dodge City Community College on September 18.
