Bonilla wins defensive award, seven Lady Cougars earn post-season honors

The Barton Community College women’s soccer team had seven players recently selected to the 2013 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference All-Conference team and one selection to the NSCAA/Continental Tire Junior College Division I All-West Region. Headlining the selections were sophomores Olimpia Bonilla, who was selected the KJCCC Defensive Player of the Year, and Bianca Barron, who was selected to the NSCAA All-West Region Team. Joining Bonilla on the KJCCC first team was freshman Millie York while sophomores Barron and Mariana Poveda were each named to the second team. Sophomores Molly Hausmann and Stephanie Lomas joined freshman Ronnie Johnson on the honorable mention team to round out the Lady Cougars’ honors. The seven selections follow a six selection last season for second-year Head Coach Aaron Avila. Named the Coach of the Year in his first season, Avila guided the Lady Cougars to a 13-4-1 record this season and a 11-1-1 mark in the Jayhawk Conference to finish tied for second in the conference. Spending much of the season in the national polls, the Lady Cougars season came to an end for the second straight season in the Region VI semifinals, falling 1-0 to Johnson County Community College.
